The Olubajé is a ritual festival in honour of Obaluaiê, the Orixá of the earth, healing and transformation.
An ancient myth tells of Obaluaiê’s exclusion due to his maimed body and the resulting insecurity, shame or rejection by the other Orixás. This story also touches on a very contemporary socio-political question: How can we achieve a sense of community in a world of diverse origins, life stories, bodies, languages and ways of life?
In the myth, the transformation begins when Obaluaiê is invited to a communal meal with all the Orixás. At the Olubajé, many dishes come together and are shared amongst one another. In this way, the communal meal becomes a living symbol of a community that does not require sameness, but is able to embrace diversity.
With the festival at Saida, we honour and give thanks to Obaluaiê and open a ritual space for healing and transformation, for a sense of belonging and the power of diversity.
